A creative upgrade: painting bathroom tiles

Painting is a form of art though which people can express their ideas and emotions. It acts as a beautifying agent wherever it is placed. A bathroom’s beauty depends heavily upon its design and colour combination. People who cannot find tiles with designs that they have in mind, can go for painting the bathroom tiles. Painting can be done on almost every type of tiles which is available in the market. Changing the tile colour by painting over the whole area is also possible. This change of colour can help to rejuvenate the look of an old unused bathroom. Not only tiles but also almost everything present in the bathroom can be painted according to the user’s desire. The bathroom fittings like the toilet, washbasin etc can be painted to look new. The large things in the bathroom like the bathtub and the walls of the shower area can also be painted to enhance the overall look of the bathroom. Small glass paintings can be done on the mirror for increasing its attractiveness. But while doing this, care must be taken to ensure that the painting does not affect the reflection formed by the mirror. Even the ceiling can be made more dashing by painting something vibrant on it.

Painting bathroom tiles whether it is adding a design or completely changing the colour involves certain processes.

The first and most important step that should be taken in the process of painting is preparing the tiles before application of paints. The tiles are to be properly cleaned before painting. Special care must be taken while painting tiles which are frequently subjected to dampening. The tiles must be without any dust particles. This is to ensure that the paint used is not affected by the dust and dirt particles that are present on the tiles.

The next step is to sand the tiles using a sandpaper. This is to ensure that paint sticks to the surface of the tile uniformly and that it doesn’t come off easily. Sanding also removes any irregularities present on the surface, even though such irregularities seldom occur.

Once sanding is done, the dust left over due to the sanding process is wiped off the tiles using a damp cloth. After removing the dust, the tiles are allowed to dry before applying the paint.

Special types of paints are available for painting tiles. These paints are water resistant and don’t get affected even when subjected to prolonged dampening. Two or three coats are applied according to the material of the tile and colour used. A primer that allows the paint to bond and hold on to the surface of the tile is applied before using the paint. Once painting is over, sufficient drying time must be provided.
